Recovery Support Peer Specialist Training

VIA HOPE IS NOW OFFERING RSPS (RECOVERY SUPPORT PEER SPECIALIST) TRAINING!

Recovery Support Peer Specialist training is a five-day, 40-hour training designed to provide individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to become certified as a Recovery Support Peer Specialists in Texas. This training offers a tailored curriculum aimed at equipping individuals with the essential abilities and insights to adeptly assist those facing substance use challenges on their path to recovery. This training is specifically crafted for individuals who have personally encountered substance use challenges and aspire to use their unique lived experiences to help others on their self-directed paths to recovery.

At the end of this training, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the history of the recovery movement;
  • Understand the role of individuals in recovery in a recovery-oriented system;
  • Understand the values and ethics of the Recovery Support Peer Specialist profession in Texas;
  • Understand the variety of roles and tasks that a peer specialist maybe asked to perform within their scope of work;
  • Develop the skills necessary to provide effective peer support services in both individual and group settings; and
  • Understand that the certification training is only the beginning of a professional development process that will continue during the course of their initial and subsequent certifications.

Participants will be asked to share some details of their recovery stories as part of training, and should be aware that content may be difficult.

This training is required to become a Recovery Support Peer Specialist in Texas. The training is followed immediately by an online knowledge assessment. Once certified, a Recovery Support Peer Specialist must earn at least 20 CEUs, including 6 hours of ethics, every two years to maintain their certification. The certification program is administered according to the policies in the Texas Certification Board Policy Standards for Recovery Support Peer Specialists.

Via Hope training content is provided via Zoom through an online learning platform. Participants will be required to have an active internet connection and be on camera for the majority of the training. Individual computer access is required; participants will not be able to log on in a group environment.

The Mental Health Resource of Texas dba Via Hope does not allow the use of AI (artificial intelligence) software to record Zoom, Microsoft Teams or any other virtual meeting platforms hosted by employees of the organization. Additionally, AI is strictly prohibited during any Via Hope facilitated training.
